Washington Park
Washington Park is one of the South Side’s most storied spots – literally, as the setting for literary classics from Richard Wright’s “Native Son” to James T. Farrell’s “Studs Lonigan” novels to Lorraine Hansberry’s “Raisin in the Sun.” The neighborhood’s namesake – a massive green space spanning 372 acres – was home to the famous 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. These days, Washington Park hosts Caribbean, African and Belize themed festivals in the summer.
The surrounding neighborhood is a mix of longtime residents and new arrivals drawn by low rents, a thriving artistic and cultural scene and the park’s myriad outdoor activities. CTA bus lines provide Washington Park denizens with easy access to the University of Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology and the Museum of Science and Industry, as well as the historic attractions and business districts of neighboring communities like Hyde Park and Bronzeville.
