Woodlawn
The Woodlawn neighborhood houses one of Chicago’s more fascinating fonts of folklore, Jackson Park. Created in the 1870s by the same team that designed New York’s Central Park, Jackson Park gained worldwide prominence as one of the host sites for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The elaborate structures of those days are long gone, but the park remains one of the city’s loveliest green spaces, home to multiple lagoons, a Japanese water garden, the 63rd Street beach and an 18-hole golf course.
Beyond the park, Woodlawn is a community on the rise. Low rents and newer construction have made the area increasingly popular with Red Line commuters and students at the nearby University of Chicago. Fitness-minded residents enjoy running and biking on the famous Midway Plaisance, a narrow green strip linking Jackson and Washington Parks that houses a number of historic fountains and sculptures. Aquatic enthusiasts love the neighborhood’s miles of lakefront access, including several highly trafficked beaches.
