Logan Square
A sleepy residential 'hood until very recently, Logan Square has seen a boom in the past few years. An influx of younger residents from the Lakeview and Wicker Park areas has made this one of Chicago's up-and-coming areas. The neighborhood's many ethnic shops and restaurants reflect its status as a perennially popular destination for Latino and European immigrants, while newer cafés, boutiques and galleries signal its current hip-ward shift.
The titular square is a small but stately park marked by a large marble column commemorating Illinois' centennial. Several of the neighborhood's best entertainment options border the square. Indie rock acts regularly sell out the spacious Logan Square Auditorium, while bigger names draw crowds to the nearby Congress Theater. The venerable Logan Theater is perhaps Chicago's best bargain for movie buffs, screening blockbuster titles for under five dollars.
